The Marine Science Afloat (TM) Program
The Marine Science Afloat (TM) Program is Pacific Marine Research’s flagship program, which has been operational for almost 30 years. It provides people with the opportunity to develop a connection with Puget Sound through educational and interactive activities. Pacific Marine Research’s floating classroom aboard the Argosy’s 85 foot vessel Goodtime II offers groups with the opportunity to get their hands and feet wet by teaching each group the methods and value of sampling water quality and plankton, and exploring the diverse sea life of Puget Sound. The groups range from elementary school children to adults. Pacific Marine Research’s highly experienced staff will tell each group about the history of Puget Sound, about its marine life, and how individuals can help protect. The Program uses fun, interactive teaching tools and methods to educate groups on Puget Sound. Building a connection between individuals and the Ocean environment allows each to realize the sensitivity of the Ocean to our daily actions and take an interest in protecting Puget Sound.
Pacific Marine Research is proud to have had the opportunity to educate an average of 60 students per trip with approximately 80 trips per year for an average of 4,800 students/year for over 30 years (almost 150,000 students!). The Marine Science Afloat (TM) program is implemented in many of the school’s curriculum for educating their students on science and the Ocean.
Research Vessel: The Goodtime II
Pacific Marine Research’s long standing partner, Argosy Cruises, provides an 85 foot, fully licensed and Coast Guard inspected ship called the “GOODTIME II” for all of Marine Science Afloat (TM) excursions. The ship has two covered decks enclosed by huge picture windows. It is an extremely stable and comfortable floating classroom easily accommodating 80 students. Due to its size and layout, four different group activities can take place simultaneously, allowing total program flexibility.
