Did you ever wonder what it would be like to be a marine scientist? Well, now you can be a marine scientist for a day during the Marine Science Afloat (TM) field program. During the program, you get to learn how to use oceanographic instruments used by marine scientists to understand how the marine life live in Puget Sound. You get to take plankton samples, use microscopes to identify tiny organisms, watch planktonic animals swim under a video microscope, collect water samples by casting instruments deep into Puget Sound, and learn how marine mammals (whales, dolphins, porpoises, and seals) hold their breathe underwater. The fun doesn’t stop there.
You will also be able to join a team of professionally trained and certified SCUBA instructors on a live dive where you will be able to interact with the divers and marine life they encounter through a live video feed. You get to ask questions to the diver on the life that you see and watch the wonderful marine life of Puget Sound live! You will be able to see a wide variety of sea stars, clams, snails, anemones, and maybe an octopus. You never know what you are going to find when you go on a Live Dive with Pacific Marine Research!
Not only do you get to watch Puget Sound’s diverse marine life in ints own natural environment, but you get to interact with the animals top side during Marine Science Afloat’s Touch and Learn session. You will have the opportunity to feel shells of crabs, the softness of anemones, and feel the many “feet” of sea stars. The Marince Science Afloat (TM) program offers you a once and a lifetime opportunity to discover and learn about the marine life of Puget Sound just like marine scientists.

Here Is A Taste of One Activity on the Marine Science Afloat (TM) Trip!
An underwater video camera operated by our diver takes us to explore rocky reefs, kelp forests, sea pen beds, and piling communities. We will meet the inhabitants of the sea floor In their natural habitats and observe their behaviors. We are linked to the diver by two-way radio so everyone can listen to their comments and ask them questions. Whether peering into an octopus den or stalking a nimble crab, it’s a true adventure. Returning to the boat, our diver will bring collected animals onboard for hands-on inspection.
